About Museical Notations of Soprano Alice Nielsen:
Alice Nielsen, born in 1871, settled in Kansas City as a child. She caught the attention of composer Victor Herbert and became an international sensation performing operettas and, later, opera. She was known to Kansas Citians in her day as “Our Alice.”
Kansas City Museum acquired costumes, scores and photographs from Nielsen shortly before her death in the 1940s. Jones explores Nielsen’s notations for insight into Nielsen’s approach to character and how it’s interpreted in song.
