Outreach Programs

Scouting

Each of these facilitated workshops is designed to fulfill educational standards, while also providing unique learning opportunities in an exploratory environment. Teamwork is essential during these activities. Chaperones are required proportional to group size.

The Discovery Area educator materials feature activities for both before and after participating in a workshop.

Thinking like a Scientist
(Grades 1-3) 15-30 students — One hour — Tues, Wed

Using food as the context, students learn to use the scientific process in the kitchen. Students will...
• Observe types and traits of foods
• Describe differences in similar food products
• Predict scientific outcomes
• Test the results
» Download Educator Guide (PDF)

Gross Science
(Grades 4-8) 15-30 students - One hour

Add some gross to the students’ Science City experience. Discover some gruesome tricks and mix up some ooey, gooey messes. Investigate the real science behind some spooky fakes.

Science of Popcorn I
(Grades 1-3) 15-30 students — One hour — Thurs, Fri

Students experiment with how popcorn is prepared and learn some of the physical science behind how it "pops". Students will...
• Compare and contrast types of corn
• Predict results with different popcorns
• Taste the outcome
» Download Educator Guide (PDF)

Science of Popcorn II
(Grades 4-12) 15-30 students — Two hours — Thurs, Fri

While working in teams students experiment with popcorn and discover the science behind these mini-explosions. Students will...
• Experiment with variables that affect popcorn's ability to pop
• Compare and contrast types of popcorn
• Hypothesize reasons for kernels popping or not
• Test methods or products that may affect results
• Conclusions discussed with class

Engineerium

Robots 101
(Grades K-4) 15-24 students - One hour
Beginning design and programming concepts are introduced in this laboratory environment. Discover how a robot performs differently as student teams make key decisions and changes to a working robot. Using LEGO Mindstorm™ products, students will learn how different factors, such as tire size, speed and power affect how a robot works.

LEGO Robot Challenge
(Grades 5-12) 15-24 students — Two hours

In design teams of builders and programmers, students create functional robots to navigate a challenging course. Students will...
• Design and build working robots using LEGO Mindstorm™
• Program robots to carry out specific instructions
• Test the robots and modify the programs to accomplish tasks

Smart Robots
(Grades 5-12) 15-24 students -- Two hours

Teams will build their robots to meet specific design criteria, eventually adapting their robot to compete in a LEGO Derby at the end of the program. Each robot will be programmed to sense its environment and change its behavior accordingly. Teams will be challenged to design a better robot that will withstand the ultimate challenges in the Derby match.

Dino Lab

Prehistoric Dig Site
(Grades K-3) 15-20 students One hour

Young explorers will uncover the mysteries of the ancient world of dinosaurs and prehistoric monsters. Participants will hunt for the fossil remains of giant creatures that lived 80 million years ago, and work together as teams to determine what they have found. They will piece together information to learn about the environment and ecosystem these creatures could have lived. Students will see actual dinosaur fossils being prepared for exhibit during their tour through Science City’s Dino Lab.

Bone Wars
(Grades 4-8) 15-24 students Two hours

Significant dinosaur discovery occurred during a heated competition between dinosaur hunters. History was shaped through the race to publsh scientific findings, performing research and preparation of fossils. Students will participate in their own battle to complete their research and erect their dinosaur skeleton for display. Observe the process of actual dinosaur fossil preparation during the behind the scenes tour of the Science City Dino Lab.

KinderLab

KinderLab
(4 Years-Grade 1) 10-15 students — 1 hour

Beginning scientists experience the fun of science with hands-on activities using real laboratory tools and scientific vocabulary. Activities involve the students in multi-sensory learning. A Science City educator demonstrates a scientific concept, and children are encouraged to use their natural curiosity and imagination to experiment and discover. Small groups allow all children adequate experimentation.

Measuring Matters
Guided activities in weighing/comparing solids using balance, spring and digital scales. Science process skills of wondering, thinking, predicting/hypothesis-making, testing, observing and sharing aloud are emphasized.

Kinder Testing
Safe laboratory tools such as graduated cylinders, beakers, test tubes, pipettes, tongs, Petri dishes, are used in multi-sensory learning activities. Scientific vocabulary is encouraged in sharing aloud.

Fossils Galore
Imitate some activities of paleontologists with tools and materials similar to those used in dig sites. Activities reference dinosaurs and fossils from many kinds of plants and animals.
