Adopt-an-Artifact Results

The “Octopus Bag” was the big winner during the Adopt-an-Artifact campaign this Spring. Friends members and Museum patrons voted for their favorite among three wonderful Native American artifacts from the Museum’s Dyer Collection.

Voters chose the “Octopus Bag” to be conserved, garnering 38 percent of the votes. The Octopus bag, named for the wide cloth fringe resembling the tentacles of an octopus, was worn by men around the neck and shoulders for special occasions.

“The significance of these artifacts is in the skill with which they were created, their age and their importance to the overall Native American collection here as examples of specific items from a particular time and place,” curatorial specialist Lisa Shockley explained. “As a history museum, time and place are extremely important to us.”

Conservation treatment will include general cleaning, stabilizing existing fabric, and re-attachment of loose beadwork. Conservation of this artifact is expected to cost several thousands of dollars. The Friends are still collecting donations to conserve the Octopus bag. Please consider making a monetary donation to conserve this precious piece of Native American history. Make checks payable to: Friends of Kansas City Museum Adopt-an-Artifact Program, 3218 Gladstone Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64123 or online at friendsofkansascitymuseum.org
