Family Fun Day - Sunday, June 1st
The narrative story of the Long family and their historic home, Corinthian Hall, is presented in the newest exhibit at the Kansas City Museum, opening on Sunday, June 1, during June Family Fun Day. This month’s theme for Family Fun Day is “The Longs at Corinthian Hall,” and it will include free hands-on activities for the whole family, as well as a walking tour of the new outdoor exhibit on the Museum grounds.
The exhibit, “The Long Family and Corinthian Hall,” consists of eight panels with photos and information that explores the Long family’s involvement in their Northeast Kansas City community in the early 1900s. Included on the panels are photos of the grand estate and images of historic Kansas City postcards. The panels are displayed along the exterior fence of the Museum and will be in place over the duration of the doors and windows renovation project currently underway at Corinthian Hall. The exhibit is free to the public and is open during regular Museum hours, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday, and noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
Family Fun Day activities from 12 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, also include storytelling in the StoryTarium with Joyce Slater, a “design your own stained-glass paper window” project and playing games like horse bingo and more. First Sunday Family Fun Day is free to the public.
“The Long Story of Corinthian Hall”
A Paul Mesner Puppet Show - Public Performances
An original script written for the puppet stage by Paul Mesner, this new work is geared to school-age audiences yet, as with all Mesner productions, humorous asides are included for grown-up viewers.
Mesner is artistic director of Paul Mesner Puppets, Inc. and winner of many prizes and awards, including the prestigious Unima-USA Award from the Henson Foundation. The Long story offers much to a puppeteer, according to Mesner.
“They were an interesting and important family for Kansas City, and Corinthian Hall is such a work of art itself,” he says. “And Loula! What a character! She kept many different pet animals, which is a real boon to me on the puppet stage! And her puppets all have outstanding hats!”
