From the producers of Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away, Musealia presents the next chapter of world-shaping history, telling the story of the Berlin Wall. KANSAS CITY, MO, April 1, 2026 – Union Station officials announced The Berlin Wall. A World Divided. will open Friday, May 29th, ready to welcome local, national and international guests. All ticket types including dates and times are on sale now at unionstation.org.
From the producers of Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away. comes the next world-shaping chapter of global history and enduring importance of freedom, human rights, and democracy. The Berlin Wall. A World Divided. is the story of the greatest symbol of division in the 20th century. Through original artifacts, personal stories and rarely seen objects, it reveals how the Wall reshaped lives, divided a city, and reflected the larger geopolitical tensions of the Cold War.
For nearly three decades, the Berlin Wall divided a city. Now, The Berlin Wall. A World Divided. brings its story to life.
“Union Station is not only excited to bring the next chapter of world-shaping history to Kansas City, but also excited to welcome the world to be a part of this experience,” George Guastello, Union Station president and CEO, said. “With this exhibition, guests will step back in time to events from 1945 through the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Bringing an internationally significant exhibition requires vision, commitment and investment. As the eyes of the world turn to us during FIFA World Cup, we will be ready to welcome global audiences with powerfully important story here at Union Station.”
The Berlin Wall. A World Divided. spans 45 years of global history. This is an unprecedented collaboration, which for the first time gathers more than 40 lenders from 20 international institutions, and highlights the different perspectives and experiences of people living on both sides of the wall through a collection of 200 original objects on public display for the first time in North America.
“We had the need to explore beyond the concrete wall itself and focus on the human stories behind it – the lives shaped by division, the choices people faced, and the global consequences of a divided world”, said Luis Ferreiro, director & CEO of Musealia. “At a time when questions around borders, identity, and political systems remain deeply relevant, the history of the Berlin Wall continues to resonate in powerful ways.”
Importantly, this chilling exhibition – launched in November of 2023 in Madrid, followed by presentations in Paris and Barcelona — widens the lens on the Berlin Wall, built by the communist government of East Germany, that divided Berlin for nearly three decades because of a global conflict between two opposing visions of the organization of modern society.
The exhibition tells the story of the Berlin Wall in the context of the Cold War. Divided into four galleries, guests will experience A World Divided, Before the Wall, Division and Living with the Wall, and Global Transformation and the End of the Cold War. Each gallery is complemented with a free audio guide, available in English, Spanish and French, which will offer a global look at the facts of history.
Alongside many other artifacts, the collection includes several large sections of the Berlin Wall and materials tracing its evolution, from early barbed wire to escape-deterrent obstacles such as “Stalin’s lawn,” a spiked metal ground structure. It also situates Berlin’s division within the wider Cold War context, featuring personal belongings of Hiroshima bombing victims and objects reflecting public responses. These include notes exchanged across the Wall, evidence of escape methods such as tunnel fragments and forged documents, a child’s nuclear-identification badge, and banners from the peaceful revolutions of the 1980s.
Six Segments of the Berlin Wall En route to Kansas City – Traveling 4,000 Nautical Miles
Six original segments of the Berlin Wall are currently en route to Kansas City from Europe. Each segment stands 3.6 meters (approximately 12 feet) tall, weighs 2.5 tons, and measures nearly 2 meters wide at its base. Constructed of reinforced concrete, the pieces reflect the stark contrasts that once defined a divided city.
Originally from Germany and preserved by the Berlin Wall Foundation, the segments most recently resided in Barcelona before making their journey to the United States. Traveling approximately 4,000 nautical miles, the six pieces will be installed at a later date in front of Union Station. The installation underscores both the physical and symbolic distance these artifacts have traversed—from instruments of division to monuments of unity and historical reflection.
