The story is about Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted, orphan-respecting pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major General Stanley, and the two fall instantly in love. Their seemingly perfect love story is short-lived when Frederic finds out that he was born on February 29th, and so, technically, he has only had 5 birthdays. His pirate indentures last until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic’s only happiness is that Mabel has agreed to wait for him.
