The Chiefs plan to kick off their season with a bang.
As in fireworks.
The Chiefs will play host to their annual Red Friday Pep Rally on Sept. 5 downtown outside of Union Station, which is celebrating its centennial this year. In a news release, the rally promises “music, lights, fireworks and football” as part of the festivities.
The Chiefs open the season Sept. 7 against the Tennessee Titans at Arrowhead Stadium.
“This Red Friday Pep Rally will be one of the most unique celebrations we’ve had in the past 22 years of our Red Friday tradition,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a news release. “Union Station, just like the Chiefs, is a time-honored part of the fabric of Kansas City, and we are delighted to be able to help celebrate the centennial of this Kansas City landmark in conjunction with the start of the 2014 football season.”
The team said this will be the 22nd consecutive year that there will be a Red Friday celebration.
The event is free and starts at 5 p.m. when food and beverages will be available for purchase. A live concert is at 6:30 p.m., and the Chiefs will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. for the pep rally, which will include appearances by Chiefs players, coaches, cheerleaders, staff and other team personalities, such as KC Wolf.
Afterward, there will be a laser-based video show displayed on the façade of Union Station, which will begin at 8:45 p.m. “and pay tribute to a century of Kansas City history based around the iconic structure,” according to the release.
The event will end with fireworks.
