Anubis, The 32-foot tall, 650-pound half man, half dog which has been standing guard outside Union Station during the run of “The Discovery of King Tut” will sport a Chiefs jersey in preparation for Red Friday at the station on Sept. 5.
Quixotic costume designer Erica Sword and members of Union Station operations team will dress Anubis in a 10-foot wide, 10-foot tall red jersey, with No. 25 on the front. The number, worn by Kansas City Chiefs’ player Jamaal Charles, was selected by the public on Union Station’s Facebook page. The numbers are 3 feet tall and painted on by hand.
Anubis was scheduled to don his jersey Friday morning.
Union Station’s 100th Anniversary Kickoff Celebration and Chiefs Red Friday Pep Rally, Kansas City Celebrates at the Station, will take place on Friday, Sept. 5.
The evening of free events opens to the public at 5 p.m. and includes a live concert at 6:30 p.m.; followed at 7:30 pm by the Chief’s Red Friday Pep Rally; then at 8:30 pm “Union Station Revealed: The Monument Comes Alive,” multimedia outdoor digital show presented on a one-block long section on the exterior of the Station, created by Quixotic.
The event will conclude with a fireworks extravaganza, and will kick off 60 days of celebration leading up to Union Station’s 100th birthday the weekend of November 1st.
