Royals to celebrate Opening Day with 10-mile relay throw

Event will raise money for MLB Urban Youth Academy

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City has announced plans to celebrate Major League Baseball’s Opening Day with a “first pitch” relay from Union Station to Kauffman Stadium.

“Relay the Way” will bring an estimated 2,500 fans together to throw a baseball along a 10-mile route between the site of the Royals World Series celebration to the stadium’s pitcher’s mound. The Royals will host the New York Mets on April 3 in a rematch of the 2015 World Series.

People who want a spot on the relay route can reserve one by making at least a $30 donation to benefit the Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy. The Academy, which will provide year-round baseball and softball instruction for up to 1,000 children and teenagers every year, will be located at Parade Park in the 18th & Vine Historic Jazz District.

“Relay the Way is an opportunity for the people of Kansas City to take to the streets in support of programs that will ensure out status as the best baseball town in America for many years to come,” said Royals General Manager Dayton Moore.

If you want to purchase a spot on the relay route, go to the Relay the Way website.
