Union Station Builds On Successes With Addition Of Director Of Advancement And Community Engagement To Professional Staff

Leadership Addition Signals Yet Another Milestone In Remarkable Growth And Vibrancy For Historic Monument

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (June 8, 2016) — Union Station announced today the promotion of Christy Nitsche to newly created Director of Advancement and Community Engagement.  Nitsche has held the role of Science City Director of Programming for nearly two years and previously managed the Science Center Education Team and its programming and marketing strategies.  Prior to joining Union Station in January 2013, she worked for Time Warner Cable and Sprint/Embarq in roles including Community Relations, Communications and External Affairs.

In her new role, Nitsche will oversee the donor development department working closely with the philanthropic community to create partnerships to serve the scientific and cultural mission of Union Station. She will also be working to expand community outreach, attracting and retaining corporate and individual supporters. In that context, she will oversee Union Station Membership programs which have grown to record levels in recent years.  Additionally, Christy will direct the development and implementation of existing as well as new Union Station events.  Finally, she and her team will celebrate and grow the Union Station Volunteer Program, which represents one of the largest in-kind gifts received annually.

“I’m thrilled to be moving into this new role at Union Station,” Ms. Nitsche said.  “Since joining Science City, I’ve had the pleasure of working with so many fantastic guests, educators, volunteers and staff.  They’ve each helped shape my perspective and appreciation for this truly remarkable and beloved landmark.  Now, I’m privileged to share my passion for Union Station directly with members, donors and supporters.  It’s no wonder — when considering all these enthusiastic stakeholders — Union Station has achieved such a vibrant status in our community and entire region.”

Union Station officials shared how this newly created leadership position signals yet another milestone in what has been a remarkable run of Station growth and service to Kansas City and beyond.

“As Union Station has enjoyed renewed and substantial success in recent years, our need and ability to support the growth in strategic areas is essential,” George Guastello, president and CEO of Union Station said. “This is a perfect time to reimagine our development efforts with the same zeal and entrepreneurial creativity that has afforded the Station much success. Christy is the right person at the right time to take on these new responsibilities.  Her proven success in our science center and her previous corporate experience make this promotion-from-within the perfect fit.  We make deliberate and thoughtful decisions to ensure everything we do is world class and our mission of science education, celebration of community, and preservation of history remains our guidepost.  The addition of this role to our professional staff is one of those deliberate decisions and I am pleased Christy will be leading our community engagement efforts.”

As Nitsche steps out of her role in the science center, she brings forward deep insight from first-hand guest and supporter interaction.

“Christy’s work with our award-winning science center has really paid off,” Jerry Baber, Executive Vice President and COO of Union Station said.  “She applied fresh perspective, genuine enthusiasm and a professional focus that helped make great things happen.  Our guests have and will continue to enjoy her imprint on Science City.  Now, what a natural next step it is to evolve Christy’s success qualities to the larger place Union Station holds in our community.   Along with our entire professional staff, Christy in her new role will help ensure Union Station remains growing and vibrant . . . a source of great pride for all of us.”
