Union Station Announces Phase One Reopening of
Science City and Planetarium to Begin Wednesday, June 10

“Phase One” reopening plans include Member admission to Science City and the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium on June 10, followed by public admission beginning June 17.

KANSAS CITY, MO (May 14, 2020) – Union Station officials today announced plans for reopening two of its primary attractions beginning June 10, 2020. This “phase one” will include timed sessions, carefully controlled guest capacities, enhanced cleaning and disinfecting, and will focus on Union Station Member admissions to Science City and the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium from June 10 thru 14, 2020. Starting June 17, “phase two” admission to both attractions will open to the public.

“We’re excited to carefully begin reopening our historic monument and welcoming back our Union Station Members as well as the community”, Union Station president and CEO, George Guastello, said. “We’ve been planning and preparing for a safe and satisfying guest experience for many weeks and will be fully ready to comply and even exceed guidance from local, county, state and federal sources. We can’t wait to get back to doing what we do best – providing a safe, engaging, science-driven experience for the whole family, including our youngest learners with the grand opening of our three amazing new spaces purpose-built just for them.”

For the safety of all guests, tickets to these attractions will be available and sold ONLY online and in advance of visit, so as to minimize personal contact and maintain social distancing. As well, Science City Educators and Union Station Staff will wear face masks/coverings and strongly encourage all guests to do the same. Hand sanitizers will be available throughout the attractions and across the Union Station campus. And the cleaning/sanitizing of all areas will be enhanced to provide additional guest confidence.

“Now more than ever, our science center is needed as parents and caregivers are looking for safe, out-of-home activities to engage their children,” Jerry Baber, Union Station executive vice president and COO, said. ““Family-friendly children’s museums and attractions, such as ours, are paramount because we offer an abundance of unique experiences that engage the mind in fun, meaningful ways. As a reminder, Science City includes almost 30,000 sqft of outdoor space, including Haverty Family Yards, which will be activated and included with each Science City ticket.”

Phase One admission into both attractions will limit guest counts to 10% of rated occupancies. It will also feature morning and afternoon sessions in Science City to provide additional time to clean and sanitize between sessions. In coordination with other area museums and attractions, Union Station will follow the KC Culture Cares protocols. Watch for details regarding those operating guidelines as well as complete information about your Union Station experience on our website and social channels.

Union Station Member Tickets will be available beginning Friday, May 22nd. If you’re not yet a Member or need to renew, Station officials encourage you to go online and join or renew now in order to take full advantage of the reopening and year-round benefits.
