Auschwitz Exhibition at Union Station Breaks All Records and Reaches Another Major Milestone

Auschwitz Exhibition at Union Station Breaks All Records and Reaches Another Major Milestone

Fewer Than 10% of Total Tickets Remain

Kansas City, MO – January 10, 2022 — Union Station officials today announced the total number of guests (already attended and reserved) for the Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. exhibition has now surpassed 300,000, setting an all-time record for the Station since reopening over 21 years ago.

“This historic exhibition has forever changed us as an organization and as individuals,” George Guastello, Union Station president and CEO, said.  “When we began working to bring the Auschwitz exhibition to Kansas City nearly 6 years ago, we knew it would make an important and necessary impact.  None of us, however, could have foreseen the magnitude of that impact.  From all 50 states and multiple countries, guests have experienced this essential and compelling content in ways that will shape and reshape attitudes and lives.  For that, we are profoundly humbled and grateful to all those who made this experience possible.”

Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. – presented by Bank of America — opened June 14, 2021, and from that day forward, attendance records have been broken by every measure, again and again.  But the numbers themselves are only a partial reflection of impact.  Guest sentiment – as measured by post-visit surveys – rank this exhibition at the very top as well.  97% of exhibition visitors describe their experience as excellent.

“With more than 1 million worldwide visitors to Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away., we are certain the telling of this most tragic chapter in human history is resonating and compelling people to prioritize diversity, tolerance, and inclusion,” Luis Ferreiro, Exhibition Director and Musealia CEO, said. “Indeed, as many holocaust survivors will tell you, a message about education and raising awareness is their priority. And it is the priority of our exhibition as well. We are each responsible to never allow the seeds of hatred to take hold again. In Kansas City, as evidence by the tremendous interest in the exhibition, the message to counter indifference, intolerance and hate is resonating on a grand scale.”

The Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. exhibition was recently extended to March 20, 2022, adding another 55,000 tickets.  Nearly one half of those have already sold, with all weekends now sold out.  Tickets for Monday thru Friday remain and interested guests are encouraged to lock in their plans and pre-purchase their tickets at unionstation.org NOW to avoid disappointment.

There will NOT be another extension according to Union Station officials as the tour is scheduled to open in Malmo, Sweden in the spring of this year.

Hours of Operation:

  • Sat. 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. with last entry at 4 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased and complete details found at unionstation.org

ABOUT THE AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU STATE MUSEUM
Fulfilling the wish of survivors, on July 2, 1947, the Polish parliament created the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum on the site of two preserved parts of the former German Nazi camp: Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau. The Memorial today includes an Archive and a Collections department, and undertakes research, conservation, and publishing activities. It is, above all, an education center that teaches visitors about the history of Auschwitz and the Shoah. More than 2 million people visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in 2019.

Artifacts and images from dozens of institutions and private collections from around the world are currently on view at Union Station.
