Train fans love the historical accuracy of our one of a kind models. Kids typically enjoy climbing on our scale 1920’s steam locomotive, and everyone is sure to enjoy exploring our Kansas City landmark.

The entire KC Rail Experience takes visitors through two sections: the model train exhibit, and the Freight House Pedestrian Bridge. , and the All Aboard section of Science City. Each of these sections share a different glimpse into the historical significance of railroading and the development of our beloved city.

Why Are Railroads So Important to KC?

As settlers started moving west and passing through Kansas City, trains proved to be more reliable than steamboats or stagecoaches.. Naturally, Kansas City became a hub for settlers and goods moving west. KC’s railroad ties go back to the mid 19th century.

Union Station as we know it was built to replace the original KC rail station, as well as provide a modern, comfortable journey for travelers from all walks of life. For some perspective, in 1914 our halls were illuminated with electric light bulbs before a majority of the United States had them in their homes! With over a century serving millions of travelers, the KC rail experience is how Union Station shares our proud history with the world.

In addition to profitable commerce and luxurious travel, railroads are incredibly crucial for jobs in Kansas City. The shoulders that hold up Union Station are the same that have brought every train home safely from the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Flyer to the Kansas City Southern lines and our 6 Amtrack lines. The KC Rail Experience also honors the workers who keep our jewel of the Midwest shining bright.
