Art in the City Information

Join us for Art in the City, our second annual collaborative art event day in Science City. Children and adults can participate in a wide range of art activities, creating their own art in workshops, and working together with other guests to create a community masterpiece. This event will connect Science City to the Kansas City community through art and collaboration.

This year, we are excited to highlight a variety of local artists and business, including:

 • Caroline Meek, a local ceramic artist. Caroline will facilitate a collaborative vase painting sculpture that will be displayed at the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium after the event.
  ◦ Location: Maze Park

 • Trinity Pote, a local print maker. Trinity will be leading a screen print making activity. The first 150 guests will receive a free tote bag with bespoke Art in the City 2026 logo. Guests are invited to bring their own t-shirt to have printed on at the event.
  ◦ Location: Creative Corner

 • Jason Harrington, artist’s moniker Rif Raf Giraffe, mural painter. Jason will be live spray painting a 4 sq ft. mural.
  ◦ Location: Simple Machines at Play

 • Magpie Creative Reuse. Sustainable artists will help guests create a recycled material coral reef sculpture.
  ◦ Location: Maze Park

 • Belger Crane Yard. Glass artists will facilitate a hands-on process, allowing participants to explore the fundamentals of glass design, contributing their own creative elements to a larger, unified artwork.
  ◦ Location: Maze Park

 • What If Puppets. Puppet Showcase
  ◦ Location: Maze Park

Scheduled at 1:00pm and 3:00pm, there will be a Giant Block Print demonstration, as a steam roller presses a custom-made block print!

In addition to local artists, Science City educators will have art themed activities around the science center!
 • Maker Studio: Paper Bag Puppets
 • Creative Corner: Screen Printing
 • Engineerium: Lego mural mosaic
 • Periodic Table: Scavenger hunt and Raffle
  ◦ Scavenger Hunt: guests will follow clues around SC for the hidden Golden Camera to earn a golden camera keychain (while supplies last)
  ◦ Raffle: Enter to win one of two art supply gift baskets
And more to come!

And for the first time in many years, a Planetarium Open House!
 • From 11:00am to 1:00pm, the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium will be open for all guests to see. There will be light and color science demonstrations in the lobby outside, and a fulldome short, Our Colorful World, playing inside the dome.
 • At 1:00pm there will be a free showing of Stargaze Kansas City, our seasonal star tour (limited seats available, first come first serve).
