The history behind the best movie theater in Kansas City

Built in 1914, the original Union Station operated the largest Railway Express Building in the nation with over 900 rooms and space for over 100,000 people. What is now the Grand Hall housed cigar shops, barber shops, restaurants and more for travelers from coast to coast.

The incredible spectacle remained operational up until the 1980s. Narrowly escaping demolition through its decade of decay, the Station’s saving grace came in 1966, when Kansas and Missouri united in a bi-state initiative to fund Union Station’s renovation.

The grand reopening took place in 1999 and included the original Union Station architecture, as well as four brand new attractions: the Regnier Extreme Screen, the Planetarium, Science City, and the City Theater. 

In introducing these attractions, Union Station can better pursue their goal of uniting the people of Kansas City in history, experience, education, and entertainment. That is the Station’s mission—to inspire lifelong learning and create lasting memories.
