Wheelchair Accessible Activities in Kansas City From Union Station

At Union Station, our mission is to inspire lifelong learning and create lasting memories. That means taking special care to provide meaningful experiences for all Kansas Citians alike.

We are proud to be a part of our KC community. One way we serve them is by making all of Union Station and our attractions wheelchair and handicap accessible.

Proper accessibility affects us all. Here are some examples of how Union Station provides wheelchair accessible activities.

Wheelchair accessible activities at the Planetarium

The Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium at Union Station is Kansas City’s great connection to outer space and beyond. The Planetarium offers daily public shows including live guided star tours, family-friendly astronomy programs, and educational documentaries.

The viewing space itself is handicap and wheelchair accessible and most all events are suitable for children and adults alike using ramps, companion seating, and booster seats.

Enjoy the magic of the unknown, and be sure to keep an eye out for special events like eclipse watch parties, laser light concerts, and live telescope viewings, and more!

Wheelchair accessibility at the Regnier Extreme Screen

There is so much more to the Extreme Screen than its size alone, although it’s impressive. What makes us the best movie theater in Kansas City is our dedication to bringing the magic of the movies to all ages and ability levels.

We prioritize accessibility in our pricing, screening choices, space design, and more. Every guest is important to us in their viewing experience, but also their experience with our staff, theater, and activities, and that starts from the moment they enter.

At Regnier Extreme Screen, our movie showings, special events, and concession area are all wheelchair accessible activities for Union Station guests.

The Extreme Screen doubles as an event space

Regnier’s highly advanced projection tools, in combination with its aesthetic and functional lobby, make it the perfect space for all types of large events that maximize wheelchair and handicap accessibility. Celebrate your occasion with a historic and unique destination that is customizable to your needs.

Regnier Extreme Screen is able to accommodate:

  • Wedding
  • Receptions
  • Corporate parties
  • Conferences
  • Galas
  • Trade shows
  • And more!

Our team can also assist you in the planning process. We will ensure that you book the right space for your event, leverage available technology, and bring any additional partners to the table to make your special day everything you imagined. Check available dates now.

Wheelchair accessible activities at Science City

If you’re looking for family friendly things to do, visit one of our most popular Union Station attractions, Science City!

Powered by Burns & McDonnell, Science City is a place for children and families to experience the wonders of science through indoor and outdoor interactive exhibits, as well as instructor-led programs. With new activities happening every day, there is always something new to explore.

Younger guests can practice their social and cognitive skills in the play area and learning lab. Explorers of all ages can experience the science of light, sound, math, food, and so much more in the dozens of engaging spaces throughout Science City!

Other wheelchair accessible activities at Union Station

Model train gallery in the Grand Hall

Union Station’s expansive network of model railroads is entirely maintained by volunteers and boasts over 80 running train engines on 8,000 square feet of tracks year round. Plus, this number nearly doubles during the holiday season!

The gallery is available to all Union Station guests daily and located at the North end of the Grand Hall, making it a handicap and wheelchair accessible activity perfect for the whole family.

Next time you’re at the station, be sure to stop by. The gallery is still in process and new and exciting additions are consistently being made.

Yearly exhibitions

In line with our mission to inspire lifelong learning, Union Station hosts a new world-class touring exhibition within our historic building each year available to all guests. While topics vary, the Bank of America Gallery is expansive and all exhibitions are designed with accessibility in mind.

Past exhibitions include:

  • Pompeii
  • Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away.
  • The Discovery of King Tut
